What should I wear to my photoshoot?

Updated: Oct 17, 2024

Ohhh I love this question!!

Before we start, if you are after personalised styling advice then get in touch with me. If not, read below.

All right let's jump into it!

So you have booked your photoshoot, decided on your location, conned your friends, family or partner to join you. And now you face a existential first world problem,

"What am I going to freaking wear to this thing?"

Now this is purely opinion, but clothes can make or break a photoshoot. These photos are going to be on your walls, maybe your Facebook profile and definitely on your grandmas fridge.

Here are my ten golden clothing rules:

  1. Dress comfortably. You would think this is a no brainer, but here me out. Picture this - finally everyone is smiling at the same time, nobody is closing their eyes, the wind has died down, the sun has just peeked behind a cloud...everything is perfect, apart from you pulling out your puck from your jumpsuit that was.just.too.tight. I will be asking you do some some tricky flippy shit here and there, there will be spins, lifts and a bit of tree climbing (optional) so wear clothes that allow move movement and don't reveal underwear (unless you want them too). Last but not least, wear comfortable shoes, I have seen some close tumbles in stilettos. If you prefer a heel, go for a thick one.

  2. Mama Rentals. Where do I start with this gorgeous company? "We are for every woman, every journey. From weddings to maternity photos, baby showers to newborn photos, baby's one year old birthday celebrations to family photos down the track. We have the perfect dress for all your special milestones." https://mamarentals.com.au/pages/maternity-dress-hire-sydney Check out some examples of their gorgeous clothes. You can also receive 15% off your Mama Rentals order when you book a photoshoot in with me! Contact me to find out how.

  3. Avoid wearing t-shirts with big logos, graphics or letters. This may be more a male thing...encourage your male friend, son, father, partner or sugar daddy to wear a nice buttoned up shirt. Linen shirts always look gorgeous! Google Matthew McConaughey for inspiration.

  4. Neutrals aka. beige mums. I don't know why beige mums are getting so much heat. maybe I am a beige mum? Either way, I love their style. Whites, beige, sand, oatmeal, chocolate...so many options.

  5. Flowy dresses and skirts. If you can't afford Mama Rentals or don't have the time to get one of their outfits shipped, raid your closet for a maxi dress, or a big flowy skirt, tops with dramatic sleeves or layer it up with a coat and scarf (winter shoots). Don't wear too many clashing patterns, keep it simple Simon.

  6. Match but don't be matchy-matchy. If you are having family or group photos, pick a colour scheme, just don't all show up wear the same pattern! Try and limit the mix of contrasting patterns. If you are having photos with your partner or friend, you could wear denim jeans and have them wear a denim jacket. Or both wear linen but in different colours/styles. OR you could wear the same colour but in different shades...The options are endless, the sky is the limit! Just don't wear thing 1 and thing 2 costumes.

  7. Browse on Pinterest. Pinterest is your best friend for design advice. I have started a Pinterest board with colour palettes and clothing ideas, if you want to check this out to save your self some time then click on the link below. https://www.pinterest.com.au/fuzzymemoryfilms/photoshoot-clothing-inspiration/

  8. Avoid wearing black. Especially if you are having a photos indoors or a maternity/newborn photoshoot.

  9. Hair and makeup, should you get it done professionally or not? It can cost quite a bit to get done professionally and it sometimes takes longer than expected and may make you late to your photoshoot. If you aren't comfortable with a curling iron or not sure where to start with applying makeup then I would recommend going to a professional. I have a few Parkes locals that I can recommend for this. Or embrace your natural beauty come bare-faced! I absolutely love natural skin and hair, it is fierce, confident and 100% you.

  10. Newborns and kids. I LOVE it when the kids match mum and dad, so so cute! Keep their clothes simple and timeless. Try to avoid words or pictures on their shirts. Go for lighter neutral colours, these won't wash out their gorgeous natural skin tones. If you have a meaningful brooch or other tiny detailed items, definitely pop them on your kids to give the photoshoot some more personal meaning for you.
